Introduction, Analysis and Strategic Objectives
Kandahar University established in the year (1369 Hijri/ 1990) in Afghanistan’s former capital and current major political and cultural center, Kandahar, Under the ministry of higher education it began with the founding of the Faculty of Agriculture.
From the year 1369 hijri (1990) up to 1404 hijri (2023), 12 faculties have been successively established and made operational: Medicine, Engineering, Education and Training, Islamic Studies (Sharia), Economics, Journalism and Mass Communication, Law and Political Sciences, Public Administration and Policy, Languages and Literature, Computer Science, Pharmacy, Stomatology (Dentistry) Additionally, the Master of Public Health (MPH) program was launched in the Faculty of Medicine in 1395 hijri (2016), and the Master’s Program in Islamic Education was initiated in the Faculty of Sharia in 1402 hijri (2023), both of which are progressing successfully.
The university serves as a guiding and supportive center for the Ministry of Higher Education in the southwestern zone, overseeing all public and private universities and higher education institutions in the region.
The university publishes two academic journals, “Naranj” and “Mandeghak,” which release four issues annually and additional special editions as needed.
Every two years, it produces a catalogue for university awareness and a quarterly bulletin detailing activities.
Kandahar University is among Afghanistan’s five leading public and private universities. In 2018 (1397 AH), it achieved initial five-year academic accreditation within the higher education system in Afghanistan. During the review of its academic programs, it received the right to continue eight of its programs.
The university has signed collaborative agreements with 50 governmental and non-governmental institutions and 29 international universities and organizations, establishing academic and technical relations with 14 prestigious universities worldwide. It is a member of various global partnerships, including the Global Water Partnership, Erasmus+, the Himalaya University Consortium, the Asia Pacific Quality Network (APQN), and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation's International Quality Group (CHEA-CIQG), as well as the South Asia Higher Education Symposium (SAHES).
